The lane probably takes its name from the public house which once stood on the end of the lane in the village.(or v/v) The word Gote is derived from the medieval word "gowt" (go out) and was the name given to a channel or sluice which allowed the tide to go out when the Fens were a reed covered marshy tidal swamp.
