Today, St Matthew's Hall is a Wetherspoons pub, though over the years the building has had different uses. Built in 1830/31 in a classic Greek style, originally it was the town's first permanent library, open only to subscribers, it was divided into news and reader rooms. In 1851, the building became a savings bank and was later converted into a county court, becoming the Old Court House. In 1998, it became a licensed premises. Wetherspoons refurbished the building in 2011. The building is Grade II listed, see: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1115548
