This sign points away from the boundary of Whitley Bay Golf Course towards the housing estate which lies between Whitley Bay Cemetery to the north and Brier Dene to the south. The Ordnance Survey Six-Inch map of the area, published in 1920, shows the whole of the land now occupied by the housing estate as being within the boundary of Hartley South Farm.
