A typical cast-iron stench pole at the angle of Victoria Road and Arthur Street opposite the Carpenter's Arms (Searle Street and French's Road also meet at this five-way junction). The pole still retains its fine corona finial and a close inspection behind the telecoms cabinet Image reveals the manufacturer's name as Needham of Stockport. John Needham & Sons of Portwood, Stockport were iron founders and manufacturers of grids and manhole covers. They established their foundry in 1834 and it continued in production until 1979. One of the partners, Sir Christopher Thomas Needham, was a Liberal MP for Manchester Hulme from 1910 to 1918, when he was unseated by a Unionist.
