This class of locomotive was built by the Great Western Railway in the 1920s as a replacement for the variety of locomotives of similar wheel arrangements taken over from the multiplicity of railways in the Welsh valleys, which is where the majority worked. Later a few did migrate to other areas, generally where short distance fairly heavy goods trains had to be worked. This one may well have worked up from the Wrexham area. Of note is that it still displays an early version of the British Railways name which was very rare by this date.
