This was one of 20 locomotives of the LMS Black 5 type built after nationalisation by British Railways, but fitted with Caprotti rotary valve gear, although the program for them was in place before nationalisation. The forward steam pipes and the lower running plate running straight below the cab sides made these locomotives very recognisable.
