I just got the feeling that using this footpath, which goes to Sutton and to Barnby in the Willows, is not greatly encouraged. But it was ever thus. As a boy I remember being threatened by the Rector's wife with a pitchfork for using this path. "Footpaths are only for people on business," she shouted at me. I explained that I was taking an order to the coal merchant, Jack Kidd, in Beckingham (this was in the days before most households had access to a telephone). She wasn't convinced. I went home a different way.
