When I first saw the road name I thought it was rather harsh as the road seemed pleasant enough. Then I noticed the "I". The name derives from Haley Hole, a chalybeate well to the north west of Stromness. The word Haley is thought to be derived from the Norse word heilagr, meaning holy. The building used to be Stromness Library (see Image), but is now artists’ studios.
