Site of former ropewalk at Willington Quay

This is the site of the ropewalk building of Haggies Ropeworks beside Willington Gut, which can be seen on the left. The building was a quarter of a mile long. Rope was made here from 1789. The works was bought out by Robert Hood Haggie in 1843. The works were eventually acquired by Bridon International, who still produce wire rope here. However, the ropewalk became redundant and was demolished, probably in the 1970's. In the early 1980's, the council took over the site and landscaped it, and created a footpath along the Gut.
