This was the Southern Railway main line from Plymouth, through Exeter to London. After being closed to passenger traffic this stretch of the line was used for carrying ballast from Meldon Quarry, until that shut down. A summer service from Okehampton to Exeter has been revived, and now there is a suggestion that this route should be reopened as an alternative main line to Plymouth, in the event that the coastal route via Dawlish is washed away by storms.
