Willington Gut and the viaduct

The viaduct was built to carry the railway over Willington Dene in 1839. In 1984 it was incorporated into the Tyneside Metro. In total there are seven arches, spanning 319m (1048 feet). The unromantically named Willington Gut runs along the bottom of the dene into the River Tyne a short distance away. In recent years, the Dene has been landscaped and a footpath made along the stream. It used to be a very industrial landscape.
