Willington Viaduct

This mighty structure crosses Willington Dene east of Wallsend and carries the Tyneside Metro. Originally built for the North Shields to Newcastle Railway which opened in 1839, it has an interesting history. The stone piers have been there from the start, but the top structure was originally in laminated timber. This was replaced in 1867-69 by wrought iron, keeping the original shape. The railway was converted to the Metro in the early 1980's and re-opened in 1984. The viaduct was strengthened by additional steel girders inserted inside the wrought iron framework.
