The plaque on the wall at St Mary's reads: SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF THE REVD WILLIAM JOHNSON, A.M. LATE VICAR OF MOTTRAM TO WHOSE EXERTIONS THE ERECTION OF THIS CHURCH AND THE APPROPRIATION OF ITS PARSONAGE MAY BE CHIEFLY ATTRIBUTED. HE DIED IN PEACE DECR 2ND 1840, AGED 71 YEARS. HIS REWARD IS IN HEAVEN.
