The use of this machine on the Cambrian lines raises an interesting question. All train movements on the Cambrian are controlled by the ERTMS system which requires that all locomotives and multiple units on the line are fitted with in-cab displays. I doubt that the track machine is so fitted and can only assume it was towed from Shrewsbury by one of the class 37 locomotives which do have the in-cab displays. The lack of a 'portable' ERTMS unit is the reason that there are no longer any steam-hauled trains on the Cambrian.
