The inscription hereon reads: AS A SACRED MEMORIAL OF THE LATE JAMES ASHTON ESQ, NEWTON LODGE, WHO DIED JANUARY 23RD 1841, AGED 63 YEARS, AND OF HIS SON, THE LATE JOHN ASHTON ESQ NEWTON HOUSE, WHO DIED JULY 29TH 1844, AGED 44 YEARS, THIS MONUMENT WAS ERECTED BY THE OPERATIVES WHOM THEY EMPLOYED IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE OF THEIR KINDNESS AND BENEVOLENCE.
