The Elm Tree Inn, number 1 Long Street, closed in 2009 and now houses an antique dealer. The building is 17th century and has been altered and restored. The Elm Tree is thought to be one of the oldest continuously licensed buildings in England, dating back to 1512. It was originally called The Salutation but changed its name to The Elm Tree in 1766. In more recent years it was a restaurant. Listed, grade II, with details at: https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1263537 The market town of Devizes developed around its 11th century castle. It gained a charter in 1141 and holds a weekly market in the large and picturesque Market Place. In the 16th century the town became known for its textiles and in the early 18th century held the largest corn market in the West Country. Devizes has about 500 listed buildings - a very large number for a small town.
