Mounted on the wall of the Burgh Chambers in Galashiels is this plaque. The image is of the town's coat of arms, which features foxes trying to pick plums from a tree, and the inscription 'Sour Plums 1337'. A tale claims that the image commemorates a successful skirmish in 1337 against a band of Englishmen at a place called Englishman's Syke just outside the town. The English were gathering the wild plums of the district when they were surprised and overcome by a group of local men who, after their victory, called themselves "the sour plums in Galashiels".
