Bampton was a market town but in the first half of the 19th century its population declined and today it is officially classified as a village, not a town. Therefore it has a Parish Council and this continues to meet at the Town Hall. Originally the building also functioned as a market house but the original ground floor arcades were later infilled. The building dates from 1838 to a design by George Wilkinson of Witney. A narrow matching extension was added at the east end in 1906. Today the Town Hall houses an art gallery and there is a public toilet. It is also home to the local Post Office. The building is Grade II listed.
