The building now houses Bampton Library, operated by Oxfordshire County Council. It is also home to the Bampton Archive, a registered charity, which has a collection of documents, photographs and audio and video recordings relating to the village and its inhabitants. A shop and exhibition space are in the Robert Vesey Room, which is shared with West Ox Arts. The building was constructed with money left by Robert Vesey, a wealthy local merchant, in his Will for the provision of a school. The first schoolmaster was appointed in 1653. The first floor, at present, is too dangerous to use. The current roof, made of Cotswold stone. was last repaired in 1911! The Archive are trying to raise funds for repairs to the building. It is Grade II listed. The building is used in the television fictional series "Downton Abbey" where it appears as "Downton Cottage Hospital". Image Image Image
