A finely-cut slate tablet on the Jacobean gable at the right-hand end records that the almshouses were "founded by Stephen Mansfield in 1891 for the benefit of single women living in Old Chesterton. The original dwellings were renovated & two new dwellings were constructed at the rear by Cambridge United Charities in 1987".
