The gateway belongs to George Moneypenny's prison of 1807-09, the rest of which was swept away by John Hayward in 1853. This, and E.H. Harbottle's extensions of 1876, still seem to constitute most of the complex. Grade II listed. It is a category B prison which in recent years has been beset by many problems.
