Immediately to the left out of the image the water of Hunwick Gill enters the River Wear. The path is the route of the Weardale Way which has approached this location from the north by a gentle riverside path. From the crossing of the bridge the nature of the walk changes abruptly with a steep climb either by a vertical ladder or by steps beside it. The steepness continues above with more steps.
