Rookland, and Punkerton, and Kidland-lee, Dryhope, and Milkhope, and the charming Heigh, Flowing with milk, and rich and fleecy flocks, And fam'd for Coleys — guardians of the stocks." From 'The marriage of the Coquet and the Alwine' ed. by J. Adamson (1817). Notes explain: "Rookland, Punkerton or Punchardton, Kidland-lee, Dryhope, Milkhope, and the Heigh, are rivulets which enter the Alwine." "Coley is the name given to the shepherd's dog, in the neighbourhood of Cheviot. The sagacity of these animals is truly surprising, and would scarcely be credited by those, who have not had an opportunity of observing their actions."
