Looking north, with Great John Street at bottom left and Friar Street at bottom right. Visible buildings include the Dukes Theatre (at the far end of Friar Street), the Grand Theatre (beyond, in the centre) and the old Yates & Jackson brewery (extreme right). The area around these buildings, now branded as the Canal Quarter, has been earmarked for redevelopment for decades. For a long time a city centre relief road was planned. It was presumed that most of the new buildings would be for major retailers. Neither of these is likely now.
