Manchester Town Hall has featured a giant Santa Figure every Christmas since the mid-1980s (see https://ilovemanchester.com/father-christmas-manchester-pictures-decades/ I Love Mcr for photos and more information) . For 2019, however, he has been reincarnated and moved to Piccadilly Gardens where Manchester's new giant light-up Father Christmas figure, complete with twirly moustache and a giant gift-wrapped box for a plinth, was lit upon 25th November 2019. The new Santa Claus figure, replaces “Zippy” (Image]), the popular Santa figure which had been an annual feature outside the Town Hall since 2007 and is now “enjoying his retirement” outside the Kellogg's factory in Trafford (https://www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-manchester-news/manchesters-famous-zippy-santa-found-17309735 Manchester Evening News). The new Santa forms the centrepiece of a festive trail of light sculptures across the city centre, which have been made from biodegradable sugar cane and recycled aluminium and feature low-energy LED lights. The trail includes a number of spectacular light sculptures in Piccadilly Gardens itself including this multi-coloured archway.
