Wood Street is the road leading away to the left in front of the former Wilts and Dorset Bank, now a hairdresser's salon. The Wilts and Dorset was founded in 1835 but was taken over by Lloyds Bank (later Lloyds TSB) in 1914. The building on the right is the former Goddard Arms hotel, recently closed after many years of service, mainly because it was unable to compete with the much more modern chain hotels - Hilton, Holiday Inn, Madison and Travelodge are just some - that have establishments in and around Swindon. Update June 2010: the Goddard Arms recently re-opened as a pub with restaurant and rooms http://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1899238 Frith's view http://www.francisfrith.com/swindon,wiltshire/photos/high-street-and-goddard-arms-c1950_s254023/
