Somewhat unusually, but not uniquely, when trains pass at Axminster they use the right-hand line, contrary to the usual British railway convention of passing on the left. The track layout and gradients favour this approach. Where passing is not required, trains use the near platform where the main station building and exit are situated. Axminster was the junction for the branch to Lyme Regis, a winding line of some 6 miles which crossed over to the south of the main line by means of a flyover as it headed for the coastal town. The site of the old branch bay platform is on the right, hidden in the shrubbery. The branch was completely closed in 1965.
