As if the major redevelopment of the St James site is not enough, extensive road works are in progress at Picardy Place where Leith Street and York Place meet Leith Walk. The name refers to the village of Picardie set up here in the mid 18th century by French silk weavers. They attempted to manufacture silk by planting mulberry trees on the nearby hill to feed silkworms; hence the name Multrees Hill, now commemorated by Multrees Walk off St Andrew Square. The village had to give way to the expansion of the New Town in the 19th century. (From 'Lost Edinburgh' by Hamish Coghill, Birlinn Edinburgh 2014).
