By 1984 local bus services around Rochdale were operated by the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive, a huge organisation that had subsumed all the former municipally-operated services in a wide area around Manchester. The simple one- and two-digit route numbers which had been familiar for years were all changed to 3-digit numbers which no-one could remember. Here is a Route 455 double decker: the destination blind reads PEPPERMINT BRIDGE. Even plenty of local people would not recognise this as being in New Hey.
