The memorial is thought to be near the spot where 'Dick Whittington', disenchanted and returning home after not making his fortune in London, heard the bells of St Mary-le-Bow ring out, 'Turn again Whittington, thrice Lord Mayor of London'. Today a pantomime character, based on a real character from Pauntley in Gloucestershire Image The memorial was erected in 1821 and restored in 1935, and the cat sculpture was added in 1964.
