Lindores Abbey ruins

The medieval abbey of Lindores was founded by the Tironensian order in 1191. It's demise came not through the dissolution of the monasteries ordered by Henry VIII as that did not affect Scotland, but via local religious strife including an attack by a mob from Dundee in 1543 and again by a mob supporting the Protestant reformer John Knox in 1559, who tore down statues and burnt books. Soon after this the monks were driven out, the abbey decayed and most of the stonework was stolen for use in the nearby town.
