The 2100 horsepower horizontal four cylinder triple expansion textile mill engine has a single jet condenser and a pair of air pumps. This is one of the two single acting air pumps and shows the bucket rod on the left that passes through the gland in the discharge plate. The discharge plate is covered with rubber disc non-return valves and when the engine is running is covered with condensate. The expanded casting of the pump above the discharge valve acts as a hot well to supply the boiler feed water. The visit to this area was with the permission and supervision of the chief engineer.
