This incredible sight is one of only three of John Foulston's civic buildings to have survived. Dating from 1821-24, "they deserve to be cherished, for they are among the most remarkable of their date". It is unfortunate therefore that they now stand "pathetically isolated amid drab post-war reconstruction". The Egyptian Revival style employed here was fashionable for a time following Napoleon's campaigns. The entrance would not look out of place in Las Vegas. Grade I listed. "Originally a classical and mathematical school, then a library, now a club and shockingly ill cared for at the time of writing"; it is still in use as a club, but happily now appears to be better looked after, externally at least.
