Below the lower gates of Thames Lock there is a stop gate, there to ensure that variation in the level in the River Thames does not unduly interfere with the lock itself. Usually the water either side of the stop gate makes a level, but sometimes if the difference in level is more than a few inches, a lot of effort is needed to open the stop gate.
