The “Ionic Ferry” grounded at Sandy Bay when approaching Larne from Cairnryan in fog during darkness. Coming just three months after the “Herald of Free Enterprise” disaster there were various “shock horror” headlines. In practice there was more inconvenience than danger. Donaghadee lifeboat stood by until she was re-floated (with ease – I watched it), on the afternoon tide, with the help of two tugs from Belfast.
