Foundation stone on the wall of the chapel at St John's School, Leatherhead. It reads: "To the glory of God this stone was laid by Field-Marshall the Viscount Montgomery of Alamein KG 30 March 1962". Lord Montgomery was chairman of the school governors at the time. The chapel was dedicated on 13 June 1963. It replaced the old chapel, situated in front of the main building in Epsom Road, originally built in 1876, which then became a library. The £50,000 cost of the new chapel was provided by an anonymous benefactor who had been persuaded to donate the funds by Lord Montgomery. in 2010 it was revealed that the donor was the Canadian businessman, Garfield Weston. The architects, also appointed after being approached by Lord Montgomery, were the firm Seely & Paget.
