Originally an ironstone mine, Shakemantle continued as a stone quarry up until the 1960s. The rock face seen here is used by climbers and a web search throws up a number of climbing sites before anything on history. This page from Gloucestershire County Council https://www.heritagegateway.org.uk/Gateway/Results_Single.aspx?uid=3008&resourceID=108 is full of information, except about where the rather swashbuckling name came from.
