The local eminence, Carn Marth marks almost exactly the outcrop of a body of granite intruded into the country rock of Devonian sandstone and mudstone. Whilst it is mapped as distinct, this is just one offshoot of the extensive Carnmenellis Granite Batholith. Quarries are scattered all across the southern side of the hill. What is interesting is that this quarry was worked for dimension stone and shows almost no marking of the sheer faces by the tools used for drilling and splitting the blocks.
