A blue plaque > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6273557 on the wall informs that John William Cockrill used to live in the house from 1849 until his death in 1924. For his grave and more information see > https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/6273277. The Winchester was built in 1882, and occupied by its designer, JW Cockrill, and his family. Cockrill was the town's leading designer, and borough engineer at the time. In 1948, the house was converted to a hotel but many of the original features still remain, such as the leaded windows, the inlayed fireplace and Italian dado. There is also a magnificent staircase leading to the first floor where the decor remains elegant. The Haddon family became owners of the Winchester in 2004 and have since continued to provide guest accommodation.
