This was built as a steam winding engine in 1875 by Barker & Cope of Kidsgrove. It originally wound with flat rope but was later heavily rebuilt by Worsley Mesnes of Wigan and converted to round rope. It finished its commercial life being run on compressed air. It is now being restored by volunteers and about once per year they hire a compressor and run it slowly. This was one of the operating days and I got it to drive it slowly from the elevated driver's platform.
