Dame Emily Park is now an open park for all, having been a colliery in a previous era. Today is a gloriously sunny September Saturday afternoon; the park is filled with lots of people, all enjoying some aspect or other. There must have been some sort of organised event, as there was a live band (playing on the old bandstand, appropriately) and the skateboard arena was heaving: skateboarders were trying to stand atop an unsecured tree trunk, jump off it onto the bowl below and still stay aboard. The crowd were cheering loudly in expectation, or 'oohing' if the jump failed.
