RAF Swinderby was a Royal Air Force station airfield opened in 1940, one of the last of the stations completed under the RAF's expansion plans started in the 1930s. The airfield was opened shortly after the outbreak of WW2, while still unfinished with grass runways. Late November 1941, the deteriorating state of the grass runways forced a temporary move to Skellingthorpe, allowing the construction of three concrete runways.
