The incised stone is said to commemorate the Battle of Mortlach against the Danes in 1010 AD. King Malcolm II prayed for vistory, promising to extend the kirk by three spears' lengths if he won. He did, and he kept his promise. The symbols on the stone are echoed on Image] and Image
