Stoke-on-Trent Gas Works, Etruria - steam engines

In 1974 this large town gas works contained 22 stationary steam engines that were all disused and most of which were to be scrapped. The three in this view went in the same year. The two large engines are W Sisson & Co Ltd inverted vertical compound (enclosed) engines driving generators. They are works Nos. 2116 & 2117 of 1921 with cylinders of 10.5 & 15 (2) x 8" and rated at 150 BHP at 500 rpm. In the left background is a W Sisson & Co Ltd inverted vertical single cylinder (enclosed) engine driving a Roots type exhauster or booster. I believe this is probably works No. 5085 of 1948 with an 11 x 5" cylinder rated at 36 BHP. Despite the attempts of a few individuals, large quantities of machinery were scrapped from gas works in the 1970s although many smaller engines were saved. Larger enclosed engines like these were almost universally scrapped.
