The muffle kiln (aka muffle oven) is one of three on the site (listed as of historic significance as there is only one other in the country). It was used for the final firing of decorated pottery; the pottery was placed inside a sealed container which was heated by flues around it, so that the pottery was not exposed directly to the flames. In the play area the granite "marble" is the largest marble in the UK; despite its 2 tonne weight it "floats" on a bed of water
