It looks for all the world as though Bunyan is trying to ape the pose of the red man on the pedestrian light signal. In fact the statue was sculpted by Sir Joseph Edgar Boehm and was unveiled in 1874 - long predating the traffic lights! John Bunyan was born at Elstow in Bedfordshire in 1628 and became a puritan preacher best known for writing The Pilgrim's Progress. Following the restoration of the monarch in 1660 he was imprisoned for twelve years here at Bedford, but continued as a nonconformist preacher after his release until his death in 1688.
