Originally opened in 1995 as a private hospital and hotel complex, the Golden Jubilee campus has been owned and managed by the NHS since 2002. It occupies a large site on the north bank of the Clyde which was once part of the William Beardmore and Company Naval Construction Works. Built between 1901 and 1906, the yard covered nearly 100 acres (40 hectares), making it was one of the largest shipyards in the UK. It produced a large range of products, including ships of all descriptions, aircraft, airships, tanks, guns, shells and mines. After the First World War, it constructed locomotives and steel houses. The yard became uneconomic in the 1920s and closed its gates for the last time in 1930. Later used as ROF Dalmuir, many of the buildings survived into the 1980s, with some shipbreaking on the site. The hospital was built as a private hospital by the American company Health Care International and opened in March 1994. The on-site hotel was built to accommodate the relatives of wealthy private patients. Soon after opening, the hospital ran into financial difficulties and was taken over by the Middle Eastern-based Abu Dhabi Investment Company. The controversial venture proved unsuccessful in private hands and the hospital and hotel were purchased by the Scottish Executive for the National Health Service in 2002. The Golden Jubilee Conference Hotel was known as The Beardmore Hotel and Conference Centre until 10th January 2015. The Golden Jubilee Conference Hotel is an integral part of the Golden Jubilee Foundation which encompasses the Golden Jubilee National Hospital, the Golden Jubilee Research Institute, the Golden Jubilee Innovation Centre and the Golden Jubilee Conference Hotel.
