Although most of the station is now used as a restaurant its bow-shaped end still houses a part-time ticket office. Castle Station - on the Midland Railway Company’s Nottingham to Lincoln route - was opened in 1846. This was the first of Newark’s two railway stations, with the Great Northern Railway’s Northgate Station opening in 1852. "Castle House”, i.e. the glass-fronted offices of Newark & Sherwood Council, are situated on the other side of the railway tracks.
