Gravestone at Image An interesting stone in that it tells a not untypical story of emigration and the Irish Diaspora in the mid 19th Century. The stone was erected by a John Cree in memory of his father Joseph Cree of Ballycopeland who died, aged 56 in 1854. Joseph was a local farmer and John probably inherited the land. John was only 22/23 at that age as he died himself in 1861 aged only 29. However, the stone also mentions three brothers who all died overseas: Robert Cree who died in Madras, India, in 1861 aged 20, David who died in the USA (date unknown) and William who died in Australia (also date unknown). An Eliza Cree Roberston is also mentioned as having died in Glasgow (again date unknown).
