The raised area to the right of the road was part of the embankment which carried the Forth and Clyde Junction Railway from Stirling to Balloch, which opened in 1856. At this point there was a bridge over the road, but this was removed some time after the railway closed (in the 1950s), allowing the road to be straightened here.
